Announcing the vB Mobile Suite Contest
Posted by: | CommentsWe are very pleased to announce a contest for the new vBulletin Mobile Suite which will be released soon. The contest is simple: Design an image you will use to tell your members about the new Mobile Suite.
Once you have such an image, post it to this thread. We will keep this thread open for exactly one week, after which all nominations will be closed.
Depending on the number of entries, we will do one of two things:
1. The staff(*) will choose the top 5 entries, and put them up for a vote for Licensed Customers.
2. We will submit all entries for the vote by Licensed customers who will choose the winner.
That may be all fine and dandy, but I'm sure you are asking yourselves 'But Steeeeve. What's in it for me?"
Well, I'm very glad you asked that. Because the winner of this contest will receive a free Mobile Suite for their site.
So get those creative juices flowing and let's see what you got. :)
Note: There are no set rules regarding the image size or how you want it to show, but here is an example that Jasper is using on his site to inform his members: http://personalitycafe.com/
* Fine print: Staff decisions can be expected to be totally arbitrary and subject to our personal whim and built-in prejudices. We can also be influenced by bribes, but nothing cheap. We only want the good stuff.

Increased Spamming Attempts and Ways to Combat It
Posted by: | CommentsIt has become apparent from our customers and customers of other BB Systems that there is a targeted effort being made to spam forums world-wide. Unfortunately as part of that effort it appears that ReCaptcha may have been cracked as per this page:
http://www.allspammedup.com/2010/01/...ptcha-cracked/
Until this is confirmed, we are strongly recommending that customers consider switching to the vB Q&A Verification system for now. To do this, go into the Admin CP here:
Admin CP -> Human Verifications Options -> Image Verification -> Question & Answer -> Save
Once you do that, you can click on 'Add New Question' to add a question and answer. [Note: You can use REGEX for the answer but this is not necessary.]
For instance:
Question: What is the third word in this sentence?
Then click on 'Save'. Next click on 'Add New Answer' and enter:
Answer: the
You can add as many questions as you like and vB will choose one randomly for each registration. You can also enter multiple answers to the same question.
Also please see this thread for other things you can do to fight spam: How to Reduce Spam and Registration Bots

PHP Security Flaw
Posted by: | CommentsIt has come to our attention that there is a flaw in PHP that can cause the server to hang on on systems using x87 FPU registers.
As per php.net:
The problem is known to only affect x86 32-bit PHP processes, regardless of whether the system hosting PHP is 32-bit or 64-bit. You can test whether your system is affected by running this script from the command line.
Here is the relevant bug report: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=53632
To test your server, copy the contents of that script to a file, such as phpcheck.php. Then upload that file to your server and run it from the command line like this:
php phpcheck.php
If the script hangs or produces an error, then you should upgrade PHP on this server immediately. If you do not have root access, then ask your host.
Please note that this is not a flaw in vB or any PHP application. This is an issue with PHP itself.
